New Year, New Weird: 2026 Writing Goals

Greetings and welcome to 2026. Let's leave the dumpster-fire that was 2025 behind us forever. It can only get better, right?

Edit: Well, that did not age well. And it's only January 4th.

This is not normal.

It doesn't feel like it's the right time to post about my measly writing goals. Then again, with the way things are, there won't be a right time. So here goes nothing.

Last year, I fell short on my novel goals, but I knocked out everything else. This year, I hope to get better! I will aim to spend less time doomscrolling and kicking ass on Battlefront II. Instead, I will spend more time writing freakin' books. Here is my plan:

Novels:

  • Complete Midnight Agency, Season 3

    • Finish first complete draft by Jan. (~90,000 words)

      • Currently at 78K

    • Set aside for a few weeks/months

      • Work on another project while waiting (see next major bullet!)

    • Finish first major edit by Spring (reduce to 70-80K words)

    • Edit again and again until it's ready for beta readers, NLT Summer

    • Ask a few kind beta readers to review it over the Summer

      • Work on another project while waiting (see next major bullet!)

    • Final edits in Fall

    • Hire cover artist

    • Hire editor

    • Publish (late 2026/early 2027)

  • Start worldbuilding/outline of a new Thriller series set in NM

    • Finish worldbuilding, including characters

    • Finish first draft of outline

    • Start first draft

  • Publish Fantasy Heist novel

    • Query small presses

    • If no success, explore self-publishing in 2026

      • Hire editor

      • Hire cover artist

      • Publish

Short Stories:

  • Write at least one brand-new Short Story

    • Ideally, this will be set in one of my worlds

  • Submit Short Stories throughout year

    • Continuously submit from pool of short stories

      • 4 currently active

Craft:

  • Complete as many writing MasterClass courses as possible

  • Take impromptu online courses as they arise

Reading

  • Read at least 30 books

    • Track on Goodreads
